Expertise

Julie heads our aged care and retirement living team.

She has specialised for many years in providing corporate and commercial advice to aged care providers and retirement village operators.

Julie has a Master of Laws with a major in health law. She did most of her post graduate work on the legal issues surrounding adults and children with impaired capacity.

Areas of practice

Julie provides advice to aged care providers and retirement village operators in the following areas:

  • The acquisition, sale and development of aged care facilities and retirement villages
  • Drafting retirement village disclosure documents and residence contracts for loan, lease and freehold retirement villages
  • Undertaking individual retirement village unit conveyancing for retirement village operators
  • Providing regulatory compliance advice on all matters arising under the Aged Care Act and the Retirement Villages Act
  • Training and policy development
  • Coronial investigations
  • Workplace health and safety

Julie also provides advice to peak industry bodies such as Aged Care Association Australia and Aged Care Queensland.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws, Queensland University of Technology
  • Master of Laws (Major in Health Law), Queensland University of Technology
  • Admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Courts of Queensland and New South Wales and the High Court of Australia

Recent projects

  • Acting for a national provider of aged care services in relation to the acquisition of a portfolio of residential aged care facilities.
  • Acting for a listed entity and providing all advice relevant to the operation of retirement villages owned by the entity.
  • Acting for various retirement village operators in establishing precedent document systems for loan/lease and freehold schemes.
  • Conducting a review of the Aged Care Act for a national peak industry body including undertaking a national survey of aged care providers and drafting a report on the results of that survey for submission to the Commonwealth Minister for Ageing.
  • Undertaking individual retirement village unit conveyancing for various retirement village operators.
  • Acting for aged care providers in relation to sanctions imposed by the Department of Health and Ageing and in relation to findings of non-compliance imposed by the Standards and Accreditation Agency.
  • Acting for aged care providers in workplace health and safety prosecutions and coronial matters.
